Lian, Batangas - The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Region IV-A has actively participated in the NIA 2023 Tree Planting activity, held simultaneously across the nation. The event, with the theme "Tao, Agrikultura, at Kalikasan Para Sa Progresibong Kaunlaran," took place in Brgy. Pook, Lian, Batangas.

Led by Regional Manager Engr. Wilson Lopez and NIA CBIMO Manager Engr. Jaime De Jesus, the NIA Central Office, NIA IV-A Regional Office, and NIA CBIMO staff responded to the call for environmental stewardship, particularly focused on the preservation of the Palico River Irrigation System (RIS) watershed. This watershed plays a crucial role in irrigating a vast service area spanning 1,108 hectares, benefiting a total of 644 farmers.

The annual tree planting initiative serves as the Agency's contribution to the government's National Greening Program (NGP). Moreover, it aligns with the objectives outlined in the NIA National Irrigation Master Plan (NIMP) 2020-2030, which underscores the significance of rehabilitating and safeguarding water resources.

"Mahalaga na pangalagaan natin yung ating mga watershed sapagkat dito nakasalalay yung abundant supply natin ng tubig para mapatubigan ang ating mga sakahan," emphasized RM Wilson Lopez.

RM Lopez acknowledges the vital role played by Local Government Units (LGUs) in fostering not only agricultural productivity but also environmental protection.

The selected tree planting site is located within the demonstration farm encompassed by the Palico RIS Management Plan for Irrigation Water Resources. This comprehensive plan aims to rejuvenate the watershed, which serves as a lifeline for the Palico RIS, ensuring a sustainable and ample water supply for agricultural needs.
